Create a Kids Packing List and Empower Your Kids Independence

Sleepovers are so much fun for kids, but as parents we need to make sure that we pack the right pajamas, have the comfortable underwear, and don’t forget the favorite blanket. Instead of packing for your child, have them pack their own items. Kids as young as 2 years old can start packing for overnighters with a visual kids packing list. This both empowers your children by giving them confidence and the know-how to pack for a ‘trip’, and also builds their excitement by starting out with them in control.

Benefits of kids packing themselves

  1. Boost Independence: Packing their own bags empowers kids to take responsibility for their belongings. It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to learn organization and self-sufficiency.
  2. Encourage Decision-Making: Selecting their own items helps children make decisions, fostering a sense of ownership over their choices and boosting their confidence.
  3. Avoid Forgetting Favorites: Kids have their own preferences. Let them pack their favorite PJs, toys, or books, ensuring they have everything to make their sleepover enjoyable.
  4. Builds Responsibility: Packing a bag teaches kids to think ahead, plan for different scenarios, and anticipate their needs. These skills are valuable life lessons!

Create a checklist for your child

If your child can already read, you can create a simple checklist of items they should pack. If your child is younger and is not yet reading, having visual aids gives empowers them to do the packing without asking for your help. Just hand them their list and their suitcase or duffle bag.

Here are some items that I include on checklists for my kids:

  • pillow
  • blanket (or sleeping bag)
  • toothbrush and toothpaste
  • pajamas
  • underwear
  • shirt
  • bottoms
  • socks

My kids always pack their own ‘luxury’ items, but if you want to add them to the list, here are some suggestions:

  • favorite toy
  • stuffy
  • bedtime story/book
  • night light
  • snacks
  • game
  • slippers
